BALANCING THE FEDERAL BUDGET
One thing that Rocky learned as a business owner is a key reality that government has not yet figured out. You can’t spend money you don’t have. That was a simple rule Rocky insisted on following back in the 1990s when he was majority floor leader in the Michigan House of Representatives. Back then, Rocky worked with the governor to cut taxes, cut spending, and trim the size of government – and the state economy boomed, helping business create hundreds of thousands of jobs.
As trillion dollar deficits loom well into the future, the federal government is putting a burden of debt on our children and grandchildren that is clearly unsustainable. This debt is a hidden tax on us and our children that not only threatens our economic well being but could potentially affect national security as well. This is because competitors and market adversaries such as China hold this debt and could use it as leverage to their advantage. That’s why Rocky believes balancing the federal budget must be both a domestic and a foreign policy priority.
